Author Guidelines

"Moscow University Bulletin. Series 5. Geography" publishes the results of original research completed in various areas of geographical science, theoretical, methodological, and review articles of interest to the international scientific community. Brief reports, information on important scientific events, book reviews are also published in the journal. Materials presented for publication must comply with the formal requirements of the journal. They go through the procedure of blind peer review and get a recommendation for publication by the editorial board of the journal. The decision on publication is made on the basis of scientific merit and relevance of the submissions. Articles rejected by the editorial board cannot be re-submitted.

To send an article to the editorial board on the journal's website, you must upload:
  1. The text of the article with inserted figures and tables (requirements for it are presented below)
  2. Figures - as separate files (requirements for them are presented below)
  3. Conclusion on the possibility of open publication (scan with signatures and seal of the organization)

New submission. Materials submitted to the editor should include a supporting letter from the first author’s institution; text of the article, signed by all the authors; tables, figures with figure captions; abstract and keywords. Some materials - paper title, authors' names, their affiliations, abstract and keywords - must be submitted also in English. All article-related materials (except the supporting letter) are submitted electronically together with two print copies. Online submission proceeds either via the editorial e-mail address or the journal’s website.

Formatting requirements. The front page of the article contains the index of the Universal Decimal Classification UDC (printed above the article title on the left), initials and surname of the author(s), title of the article. Affiliation, position, academic degree, and e-mail address of each author are indicated at the bottom of the page in the form of digital footnotes. The article should be clear, concise and consistent. It must be properly structured and include the following essential elements: Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results and Discussion; Conclusions; Acknowledgements (if necessary, this section provides information on the financial support of the work carried out within the framework of a research project); References.

The text is typed doublespaced, font Times New Roman 12 points, indented paragraphs 1.25 cm. Pages of A4 size have top and bottom margins of 2 cm, left and right margins of 2.5 cm and 1.5 cm, respectively. Numbering should be indicated at the top of the page. The paper size should not exceed 14-16 pages (including references and tables) and 3-4 pictures. Extended articles might be published on the decision of the editorial board. Numbering of formulas (continuous throughout the article) is indicated in parentheses (1, 2, etc.) on the right side. Only formulas that are referenced in the text should be numbered. References are listed at the end of the article: first, references in Russian, and then references in English. In the text, reference to the authors and the year of publication are given in brackets, e.g., [Ivanov, 2007; Petrov et al, 2008; Geographiya ...., 2010]. The list of References is arranged in the following order: for monographs, surname and initials of the authors, the full title of the monograph, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, page; for periodicals, the names and initials of authors, article title, journal title, year, volume, number, pages. The list of References is duplicated after the summary and key words in English: all Russian-language publications in this list should be transliterated (we recommend a resource http://www.translit.ru) and their titles should be translated into English. It is necessary to complete these steps: write the names and initials of the authors in Latin letters, transliterate the title of the publication, write the English translation of the title in brackets, transliterate the output information of the publication, indicate that the original language of the publication is Russian - (in Russian). References in other languages are given in the original version.

Tables should be typed on a separate page each, doublespaced, font size 12 points. They are numbered in Arabic numerals in the order they are mentioned in the text. Table number is followed by its title. All columns in the tables must be divided by vertical lines and have headers. Illustrations should be presented in 2 copies separately from the text of the article (on the back of each illustration, pencil drawing should indicate figure number and authors’ surnames) and on a separate CD. The illustrations should avoid unnecessary details and inscriptions (letterings should be replaced by numbers or letters explained in figure captions or text). The lines in the figures should be clear (5-6 pixels). Figure width and height should not exceed 180 and 240 mm, respectively. The recommended font to use on the figures is Times New Roman, 9-10 points. Drawings should be black and white, it is recommended to use different types of shading (with a step size, allowing further reduction). Photos (2 copies) should be printed on a contrasting paper, their surface should not be fractured or folded. Figure captions are submitted on a separate page, typed doublespaced, font size 12 points, and English translation should be provided.

Articles are collected in the editorial board office at the Faculty of Geography in room 2108a.
